Alcohol: The Scriptures

Psa. 104:14-15: “14He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and vegetation for the labor of man, so that he may bring forth food from the earth, 15and wine which makes man's heart glad, so that he may make his face glisten with oil, and food which sustains man's heart.”
Prov. 23:21: “21For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe one with rags.”
Rom. 14:23: “23But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and whatever is not from faith is sin.”
1 Cor. 8:9,12: “9But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak…. 12And so, by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
The Constitution of the Holy Apostles: “We say this, not that they are not to drink at all, otherwise it would be to the reproach of what God has made for cheerfulness, but that they be not disordered with wine. For the scripture does not say, ‘do not drink wine’, but what says it? ‘Drink not wine to drunkenness.’”
Calvin: “When God daily gives us a large supply of wine, it is our own fault if his kindness is an excitement to luxury; but, on the other hand, it is an undoubted trial of our sobriety, if we are sparing and moderate in the midst of abundance.”
The Westminster Confession of Faith: “God alone is Lord of the conscience, and hath left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men, which are, in any thing, contrary to His word; or beside it, if matters of faith, or worship.”
Barth: “The man who avails himself of them does so on his own responsibility…[but] by his actions he must on no account cause the ‘weak’ man to do anything that to him would be sin.”
